Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuary Thrissur Kerala


Punathurkotta is very unique in being the largest elephant park in the world with over 60 elephants. All of them are donated by the devotees of Guruvayurappan.Sprawling over 10 acres of area, the place attracts hundreds of enthusiasts every day who come here to see the unique spectacle of tuskers in various modes of daily activities everywhere- some being bathed, some being fed and still others displaying playful antics. The role of elephants is deeply imbedded in Kerala’s culture and folklore, and all of these tuskers are donated by Sri Guruvayoorappan’s devotees.

The elephants of all ages are housed here which are trained for temple festivals by the temple management that includes the popular ‘Elephants race’ that takes place within the confines of the temple. Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary Thiruvananthapuram kerala

The forests of Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary constitute the catchment of Peppara dam constructed across Karamana river and commissioned during 1983 to augment drinking water supply to Thiruvananthapuram city and suburban areas. Considering the ecological significance of the area, it was declared as sanctuary during 1983. The area was formerly a part of Paruthippally range of Thiruvananthapuram Territorial Division.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary consists of Part of Palode reserve (24sq.kms) and part of Kottoor reserve (29sq.kms). The total area of the sanctuary is 53 sq.kms. The total water spread of the reservoir is 5.82 sq.kms. The sanctuary is located about 50kms. north east of Thiruvananthapuram city in Nedumangad taluk of Thiruvananthapuram district between longitude 76°40' and 77°17' east and latitude 80°7'and 8°53' north. General topography of the area is hilly with elevation varying from 100 m to 1717m. Rainfall and other climate factors are similar to that of Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary. There are 13 tribal settlements in the sanctuary. Eleven are in Athirumala section and two are in Thodayar section.

Sabarimala is a Hindu pilgrimage center located in the Western Ghat mountain ranges of Pathanamthitta District in Kerala.Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, is the most famous and prominent among all the Sastha temples in Kerala. The temple is situated on a hilltop (about 3000 feet above sea level) named Sabarimala in Pathanamthitta district.The shrine of Sabarimala is one of the most remote shrines in southern India yet it still draws three to four million pilgrims each year. It is believed that "Parasurama Maharshi" who retrieved Kerala from the sea by throwing his axe, installed the idol of Ayyappa at Sabarimala to worship Lord Ayyappa.
Sree Dharma Sastha Temple Sabarimala Pathanamthitta Kerala

The pilgrimage begins in the month of November and ends in January. The temple attracts pilgrims not only from the southern states of India, but also from other parts of the country and abroad. The shrine gets thronged with devotees especially during the main pilgrim season from November to January. Mandala pooja (December12,2011) and Makaravilakku(Jan.15th,2012) are the two main events of the pilgrim season. The temple stays closed during the rest of the year except for the first five days of every Malayalam month and during Vishu (April). Certain customs are to be strictly observed if one has to undertake a pilgrimage to Sabarimala. A pilgrim attending the Mandalapooja should observe austerities for 41 days. During this period, the pilgrim should abstain himself from non vegetarian food and carnal pleasures. Pilgrims set out in groups under a leader, and each carry a cloth bundle called Irumudi kettu containing traditional offerings. Unlike certain Hindu temples, Sabarimala temple has no restrictions of caste or creed. The temple is open to males of all age groups and to women who have either passed their fertility age and those before reaching the stage of puberty. The easiest route is via Chalakkayam, by which one can reach the banks of the river Pamba by vehicle. Pamba is the main halting point on the way to Sabarimala. From here one has to trek 4 to 5 kms to reach the temple.

Out of these springs the amazing variety of life forms some of them endemic to the Western Ghats.The core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is the Silent Valley National Park. Despite its name, the Silent Valley (the clamour of Cicadas is conspicuously absent here) is a rich storehouse of biodiversity. It is a true Garden of Eden for students of life sciences, professional scientists and field biologists.

Perhaps, nowhere else can one find such a representative collection of Western Ghats biodiversity - more than 1000 species of flowering plants which include about 110 species of orchids, more than 34 species of mammals, about 200 species of butterflies, 400 species of moths, 128 species of beetles of which 10 are new to science, about 150 species of birds including almost all the 16 endemic birds of southern India.

List of fuana  include in Silent Valley National Park - lion - tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, bonnet macaque, tiger, leopard (Panther), leopard cat, fishing act, common palm civet,small Indian civer, brown plam civet, ruddy mongoose, stripenencked mongoose, wild dog, sloth bear, otter, flying squirrel, Malabar gaint squirrel, Indian pangolin (scaly anteater), Porcupine, wild boar, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, mouse deer, gaur and elephant.

 Birds include rare such as Indian black-crested baza, bonellis' hawk eagle, rufous bellied hawk eagle, shaheen falcon, short-eared owl, penisular scops owl, Ceylon frog mouth, great Indian hornbill, Niligiri laughing thrush, house martin, rufous bellied shortwing, Malay bittern etc. About 170 species have been recorded of which 31 are migrants.The fauna include a number of possible new species, a few very primitive animal groups, notably Ceacilians (limbless amphibians) and some rare small mammals such as the Peshwa's bat and heary-winged bat.Butterflis and moths are varied and plenty. There are more than 100 species of butterflies and 400 species of moths. Quite a few of them are extremely rare and endemic.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is a 285 km² Protected area in Chittur taluk in Palakkad district of Kerala state, South India. Established in 1973, it is in the Sungam range of hills between the Anaimalai Hills and Nelliampathy Hills. The Western Ghats, Anamalai Sub-Cluster, including all of Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary,Lying in the southern part of Western Ghat, immediately south of Palghat gap, Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary exhibits mountainous terrain.

 The Altitude ranges between 300m and 1438m above MSL. Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary are 7 major valleys and 3 major river systems. Geologically the sanctuary has Hornblende biotite gnesis and charnockites. Major peaks in the sanctuary are Karimala (1438m), Pandaravarai (1290m) ,Kuchimudi, Vengoli (1120m) and Puliyarapadam (1010m). Apart from the natural rivers and streams, the sanctuary possesses  three man-made reservoirs namely Parambikulam, Thunacadavu and Peruvaripallam whose cumulative waterspread is 20.66 sq. km.The sanctuary has three man-made reservoirs; Parambikulam, Thunacadavu and Peruvaripallam, with a combined area of 20.66 km². The Thuvaiar water falls empty into one of the reservoirs. There are 7 major valleys and 3 major rivers, the Parambikulam, the Sholayar and the Thekkedy. The Karappara river and Kuriarkutty river also drain the area

Fauna
Mammals- Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary Important mammals include: Lion-tailed Macaques, Nilgiri Tahr, elephants, Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, Wild boar, Sambar, Bonnet Macaques, Nilgiri Langurs, Sloth Bears, Nilgiri Marten Small Travancore Flying Squirrel and Gaur.

Reptiles- Reptiles of very high importance in Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary include: King cobra, Kerala sheildtail, Travancore kukri snake, Travancore wolf snake, Cochin cane turtle, Travancore tortoise,. rock python, Malabar pit viper, Travancore tortoise, South Indian forest ground gecko, South Indian rock lizard, Mountain

Birds - Lesser adjutant stork, Grey-headed Fish-eagle Peninsular bay owl, Broad-billed roller and Great pied hornbill. Other birds include: Darter, Little Cormorant, Black eagle, Black-capped kingfisher, Great Indian hornbill, and Black woodpecker

Malampuzha Garden Palakkad Kerala


Malampuzha Garden 10 km from Palakkad.This famous picnic spot which comprises a dam and beautifully landscaped gardens, is situated on the lower hills of the Western Ghats. There are frequent buses to this place from Palakkad.It is full of lush green lawns with well laid-out flower beds. There are pathways to watch and enjoy variety of fountains and marvelous sculptures, including the famous Yakshi sculpture created by Sri. Kanayi Kunhiraman. There is a canal flowing through the middle of the garden, which has 2 hanging bridges above it. The ropeway moves across the garden giving an unforgettable aerial view of the garden. While going for swimming, bags and other belongings can be kept in a safety locker, which is charged at Rs. 15 per locker. Palakkad Fort Palakkad Kerala


Palakkad Fort  is an old fort situated in the heart of Palakkad town of Kerala state, southern India. It was built by Haider Ali in 1766 ACE and remains one of the best preserved forts in Kerala.The grounds are known as Kotta maidan (fort grounds). The square-shaped fort, which has a chequered history, has majestic granite walls, a moat, a  drawbridge at the entrance, bastions at the four corners and at the centre, and various other architectural peculiarities that stand testimony to the fort’s strategic importance during the 18th and 19th centuries.  The fort is now under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Inside the fort, there is a Martyr’s Column and an open-air auditorium named Rappadi, after a songbird that sings at night. The Palakkad sub-jail is also situated inside the fort.The ground around it, the Kotta Maidan, played an important part during the invasion of various armies. It was a stable for the horses and elephants that were used by Tipu’s troops. Today, it is a popular venue for expos, fairs, circuses and so on. 
At the entrance to the fort, there is a temple known as Kota ambalam (fort temple). The main deity here is Lord Hanuman.
